Session Description:

Using the Alum Crest/Clearbrook School for Emotionally Disturbed (ED) Students as a case study, we will explore the innovative ways a school can be designed for a specialized population and still exceed LEED and the 2030 Challenge requirements in today’s economy. This case study offers a unique opportunity to discuss how to design for ED students and how design can positively impact decisions for the users, building, site, and community. Systems such as archeological analyses, a Zero Discharge Stormwater design, and energy and daylighting models will be explored and the results will be shared with the group for discussion. Attendees will not only learn how to apply these strategies in a similar way for their own projects and schools, but will also discover ways to design a building that uses 1/3 of the energy as a traditional building while being built for the same price.

Learning Objectives:

1.) Gain an understanding of what the Integrated Design Process (IDP) is and how IDP can help the building exceed the requirements for the 2030 Challenge.

2.) Discuss how multiple and innovative design systems came together and how these systems helped create a more integrated school building for the unique needs of the emotionally disturbed students.

3.) Explore how utilizing Building Information Modeling can optimize a range of energy performance outcomes for schools.

4.) Learn how the integrated process helped to exceed the district’s LEED benchmark and energy efficiency requirements.
